In 2018, as some politicians mocked the idea of a 'right to privacy' from facial recognition, the ACLU of Northern California ran a test where it falsely matched multiple members of Congress with mugshot photos. Many were pissed to hear that was possible. aclu.org/news/privacy-t…

Last night, San Franciscans voted to loosen restrictions on police chases. Experts Jennifer Gollan and I talked to said this rollback will

a) not meaningfully reduce crime, and
b) needlessly endanger innocent civilians.

Your neighbors are counting on you, San Francisco. It's incredibly important that you say no to a surveillance state by voting NO on Prop E in today's election.

'Proposition E is one of the most dangerous ballot measures I’ve seen. It will give the San Francisco Police more power to use surveillance technology to discriminate against immigrant communities.'

If you live in SF, vote NO on Prop E today.

If you live in San Francisco, vote NO on Prop E. It will expand secretive surveillance, reduce transparency into police violence, and increase the prevalence of dangerous car chases.

When a company makes a privacy change affecting users an opt-out rather than opt-in, we should ask if the company did that because many users would simply say no if they were asked permission beforehand.🧐 404media.co/tumblr-and-wor…

San Francisco Chronicle's article today about the immense danger of police chases is the warning we need to oppose .

Too many lives have been lost all in the name of stopping low-level crimes, and sometimes no crime at all.

“Unchecked surveillance is not the solution to our city’s challenges,” EFF’s nash in spirit said at Wednesday’s rally. “If passed, Prop. E would expand secret surveillance while stripping away hard-won safety policies.” More from Vanguard News Group: davisvanguard.org/2024/02/san-fr…

ACLU: 'What a lot of politicians, including the mayor, are doing is trying to exploit that frustration … to justify handing more power to SFPD. It’s an easy and attractive solution, except for the fact that it’s been tried, and failed.' missionlocal.org/2024/02/prop-e…

Great thread on how face recognition boosters tout misleading test scores that obscure deeper flaws with the tech and how governments use (and misuse) it against people. Marissa Kumar Gerchick and I recently did a deep dive on this for ACLU's blog: aclu.org/news/privacy-t…

Imagine this but it’s surveillance footage and your local police catalog anyone who raised a fist at a protest.

Or it’s your boss and they’re hunting for anyone who passed out labor organizing pamphlets in the break room.

How will Google and lawmakers prevent this?
