Even so, that number is still probably a significant undercount.

Our recent San Francisco Chronicle investigation found NHTSA did not include more than 660 police chase deaths we identified in its official count from 2017 through 2021.

At least 577 people died in chases in 2022, the latest year available, according to nhtsagov.

Deaths have increased by ~40% since 2019.
