It was an incredible honor to represent #WomenInSTEM in academia at the US-Japan Women Leaders Dialogue at the Capitol. Grateful for the chance to share my thoughts with Members of Congress from both the US and Japan. Thank you for the invitation.

Pre-print up! tl;dr Australian soil and sediments are chock full of cool divergent viruses 👇 biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Another thought-provoking piece from Perry Holmes lab: "the evolution of the Articulavirales (including flu) was likely shaped by multiple aquatic–terrestrial transitions and substantial host jumps, some of which are still observable today" pnas.org/doi/epdf/10.10…

Seen many bad-faith takes for this paper. A few points: 1) 100% mortality of a respiratory virus in an immunocompetent mouse model is unremarkable. 2) Assessing the pathogenicity of SC2-related Coronaviruses in vivo is an important research question 1/2 biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Pre-print up! Possibly my most colourful paper yet. Looking at the highly diverse RNA virus family Picobirnaviridae, continuing the discussion on their true host range, and some proposals for classification. Check it out on bioRxiv 👇 biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Now published! Super divergent RNA virus lineages identified in Australian soils and some initial insights into the fascinating relationship between soil properties and virome composition. Check it out 👇 doi.org/10.1016/j.viro…

The great lengths that Flavis will go to support a 40kb genome (steal a nucleotide metabolism cassette). Great work from Mary Petrone @GroveLab and the crew. pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn…
