Today is the 550th anniversary of the laying of the foundation stone of Magdalen College Chapel Oxford. Here we have drawings by G. Cooper showing the chapel interior as it was in 1817, following James Wyatt’s restoration work in the 1790s. 1/2

In his autobiography, A Personal History, Taylor is critical of McFarlane's approach to being a Historian. And in letters to friend Helena Wright, McFarlane gives his first impressions of Taylor. The letters and book are currently on display in the Longwall Library. 2/2

Our current Longwall Library exhibition focuses on Historians A.J.P. Taylor and K.B. McFarlane who were contemporaries at Magdalen. Though they retained a professional relationship as colleagues, here we can see what they really thought of each other- & it wasn't favourable! 1/2
