The Civil Rights Movement, which fought for Black emancipation and equality, inspired the disability rights movement. Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act was the first federal law to protect people with disabilities from discrimination in programs receiving federal funds.

In the 1980s, the push for deinstitutionalization aimed to integrate people with disabilities into the community but faced some challenges, leading to increased homelessness. Meanwhile, the Independent Living Movement, empowered people with disabilities to live independently.

The ADA signed into law in 1990,prohibiting disability discrimination and mandating accessibility in public spaces, employment, and more. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA): Ensures kids with disabilities have the right to a free, quality education.

As we conclude this feature on the “eras” of Disability, we want to recognize that the Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, adopted by the United Nations in 2006, was a step forward in helping protect the rights of individuals with disabilities.

This ⬇️. Allyship is about action and not a label you give yourself. Being “nice” to people who are experiencing opppression does not make you an ally. Allyship is not contingent on you getting a 🍪 or 🌟 for doing the minimum.
