Today’s the 15th anniversary of San Antonio’s 1st MLS exhibition game - we commemorate the historic event that initially revealed the city’s enduring support for The Beautiful Game

Remember this event well. Lot's of Crocketteers involved in this event. Some would say this game is the reason San Antonio now has pro soccer. Many great soccer players played in this match.

We’re rapidly approaching the 4th anniversary - Dec. 23, 2015 - when SpursSports_ENT held a presser on Toyota Field as it slid into the driver’s seat for the SA football (soccer) community. There were SS&E executives, city & county politicians & many of you in attendance. 1/7

All on the podium promised a future as bright as that unusually warm day. There was talk of SSE’s NBA titles, championship pedigree & reputation. So you know, I found print coverage of that day in the SA Public Library archives (microfiche). 2/7

Spurs executive Rick Pych said that day: “We’re excited to continue the growth of soccer in SA (taking over from the Scorpions)... We look forward to bringing the highest level of soccer to SA.” (Express News) Not singling out Rick - that was SS&E’s official position. 3/7

So what is the highest level in SA? You think it’s a mid-table club that doesn’t make the USL Championship playoffs? Me neither. As a career San Antonio FC Supporter & STM, I remain optimistic this club can & will win championships. 4/7

Congrats to new coach Alen Marcina & we’re supporting him 100% to get SAFC far into the 2020 playoffs. The club has been there once (2017) in 4 seasons. Austin & El Paso made the 2019 playoffs & EP played in the Western Conference finals - both in their 1st seasons. 5/7

So if the last 2 seasons are the floor, what’s the ceiling? How about?: ✅ win copatejas before finishing Top 3 in the West before winning the West before winning the USL title in Toyota Field (before we storm the field - remember that?) Isn’t that the highest level in USL? 6/7

We in the Supporters Community have been in full vocal support of SAFC for 4 seasons & can’t wait for 2020. But it’s time to remember Dec. 23, 2015. Just because you’re in a minor league doesn’t mean you can’t accomplish something major. Time for SAFC to make club history. 7/7

To be accurate, the original quote referenced bringing MLS to SA. We know it didn’t happen. However, the quote has been used by the club in the years since 2015.
