New paper out nature - why are males more vulnerable to severe infections (ex acute #COVID), while females suffer more from autoimmunity (SLE, MS etc and also #LongCovid)? sex chromosomes or hormones? Here we studied adaptation of human immune systems to gender-affirming

Exciting study! T cell therapy for CNS injury. CD4 cells recruited following CNS injury exhibit neuroprotective effects (IFNg-dependent). TCRs of many such T cells recognised CNS antigens (e.g. MOG). mRNA-based expression of these TCRs dampened inflammation & improved recovery.

Wonderful talk by Lucy Walker Lab UCL at the Third International School of Immunology. Lucy described the history of CTLA-4 and her cutting edge research which helped elucidate CTLA4 function incl. CTLA-4 mediated transendocytosis. And how CTLA4 mutations contribute to autoimmunity

Another captivating talk by Carola Vinuesa at the 3rd International School on Advanced Immunology. Carola told an elegant story of pathogenic mutations in different genes which lead to breaches in B cell tolerance and severe autoimmunity (lupus). Her work Vinuesa Lab highlights how

Out today in Science Magazine! We show that rising self-antigen levels during infection give self-reactive T cells an opportunity for enhanced TCR signalling. Regulatory T cells of matched specificity counteract this, thereby preventing autoimmunity. buff.ly/3EXaXQa

Thrilled to share new work led by Jie Yang in the lab published today in nature. We find that Aspirin prevents metastasis by releasing T cells from immune suppression by platelet TXA2. Cambridge University CRUK Cambridge Centre rdcu.be/eci1U

🗞️In the news: #Type1diabetes immunotherapy - teplizumab. It can delay the development of type 1 when used in its early, symptomless stages – before a full diagnosis. The first adult in the UK has been treated with it, but right now it’s only available in research settings.

The first adult in the UK gets medication to delay the need for insulin requiring T1D. Thats progress! T cells do the heavy lifting when it comes to the anti-tumor action of checkpoint immunotherapy. But do antibodies play a role too? That’s the question @yile_dai looked to answer in his thesis work, out today in nature! 🧵below nature.com/articles/s4158…
