Please stop saying there are no words for mental health in South Asian languages. It's not true. There are many words. Different ones. Many western researchers don't know them. Western researchers don't know a lot of things about Eastern traditions or culture.

Singling out #SouthAsian languages, traditions & cultural values for being behind on #mentalhealth is a form of internalized colonialism & racism. Stigma is universal. Western psychiatry dominates the #mentalhealth dialogue, so orientalist stereotypes are inevitable.

We all need to learn more about how trauma changes your brain, habits, thoughts, feelings and decisions. There are millions of husbands, fathers, uncles and brothers who won't talk about their trauma. They take out their pent up frustrations on their wives, sons and daughters.

Generation to generation this problem grows... Unresolved trauma turns into gang violence, domestic violence, and self medication through drugs, alcohol, prostitution, pornography, and gambling. If you are struggling, please speak up. Speaking up makes you strong, not weak.

Politics has dominated my life and Paddy Ashdown was the most dominant figure in that life, he features more in my memoirs than anybody else. So sad that he has died today and the love of many friends will be with Jane, his family and many friends.
