Buoy lines used by lobstermen should be banned to protect critically endangered right whales, a federal judge wrote today in a long-awaited ruling. But because she said the plaintiff, Max Strahan, lacked standing to bring his suit, the judge didn't require MA to ban the lines.

There's a lot more in this 60-page ruling that should give pause to the lobster industry, which appears to have won a Pyrrhic victory against a plaintiff -- the self-described "Prince of Whales" -- who has taken direct aim at it. See more about him here: bostonglobe.com/metro/2019/09/…

The ruling reads like a shot across the bow of the lobster industry — and the states that authorize their use of buoy lines, which have been the leading source of death and serious injuries to right whales.

The judge asserts that buoy lines in state waters have and are likely to continue entangling and killing right whales.

Another right whale calf was found in the waters off Georgia -- the second so far this season -- but sadly it's mother, known as Snow Cone, remains severely entangled in what appears to be fishing lines, with ropes in its mouth, NOAA officials said.
