Shorebirds are the coolest birds ever (not biased!) and the focus of this Wednesday's episode of Nature. In the process, you can learn more about the amazing research of Lauren Puleo, birdecologylab, Global Flyway Network, and many others. Check it out! pbs.org/wnet/nature/ab…

Oh boy, it might be happening. Lesser Yellowlegs we put transmitters on in King Salmon, AK are departing the breeding ground - will they continue down different flyways?? Stay tuned...

Bog word of the day is ombrotrophic. Ombros (Greek)= rain shower; Trophic from trophikós= nutrition. Bogs (unlike other wetlands like fens) are ombrotrophic & receive all water & nutrient inputs from precipitation. This fosters unique chemistry & species like meat eating plants.

Single-predator-single-prey studies dominate the literature, making for difficult generalization across systems. In our recent paper, we provide a framework for capturing population-level effects of mismatches using Bayesian HMs in a multiple prey system (a short 🧵).

Nothing better than receiving this amazing drawing of a Hudsonian godwit from a student last week. Perfect way to wrap up another semester being a TA. 🍁

I couldn't resist trying a Northern Red Cardinal, after picking up some flame-coloured leaves on my walk yesterday. Compostable Autumn Art made entirely from fallen leaves and a twig!🍁🍂🍁 AutumnArt springwatchtest

My and Mary Margaret Pelton's first ever paper has been published in Wader Study! We along with JulianGW @jennylinscott and Nathan Senner found that at least 17,247 rufa Red Knots (~41% of the total pop) utilize a 24 km stretch of beach on the SC coast during spring migration. Link below!

NEW PAPER:
Annual schedule adjustment by a long-distance migratory bird, the Icelandic whimbrel
journals.uchicago.edu/doi/10.1086/72…

I could make a thread summarising the paper, but this figure does a better job.
Paper is not open access - please don't hesitate to DM for a copy.
