📢 Congrats to Ev (like in 'evidence', not Eve) Fedorenko 🇺🇦, winner of a 2025 National Academy of Sciences Troland Research Award for her groundbreaking contributions and insights into the language network in the human brain! 🤩#NASaward mcgovern.mit.edu/2025/01/23/eve… MIT Brain and Cognitive Sciences MIT Science

Congratulations to Nicholas Turk-Browne of Wu Tsai Institute | Yale University, winner of a 2025 Troland Research Award for pioneering contributions advancing our understanding of learning and memory in the human brain! Read about his contributions: nasonline.org/award/troland-… #NASaward

New preprint! 🧠🤖 Brain encoding in 21 languages! biorxiv.org/content/10.110… w/ Saima Malik-Moraleda, Greta Tuckute, and Ev (like in 'evidence', not Eve) Fedorenko 🇺🇦 (1/)

Exciting work by an incoming postdoc Andrea deVarda (Andrea de Varda). Multilingual neural net LMs have enough of a shared inter-language component so that you can train an LM-to-brain mapping model using, say, English+Tamil and then predict brain responses to Italian. Pretty wild,eh?

We investigate how the brain processes diverse languages using an LLM-brain encoding framework (led by Andrea de Varda)! Encoding models fitted on brain responses in one language transfer to a new, unseen language--demonstrating a shared representational space across languages.

🚨 New open-access paper out now in PB&R: link.springer.com/article/10.375… We (w/ Ted Gibson, Language Lab MIT, Center for Brain Recovery) explore how individuals with aphasia interpret sentences & whether their comprehension difficulties stem from increased expectations of noise in language input. 🧵👇

Congratulations to Stanford NLP Group founder Christopher Manning for being elected to The National Academy of Engineering (NAE, National Academies) Class of 2025 for the development and dissemination of natural language processing methods.

A decade of studies from labs around the world provide a growing evidence base that increasing the power of the brain’s gamma rhythms could help fight #Alzheimers, and perhaps other, neurological diseases. picower.mit.edu/news/review-ev… #neuroscience MIT Science MIT Brain and Cognitive Sciences

A PNASNews study by Ev (like in 'evidence', not Eve) Fedorenko 🇺🇦 Saima Malik-Moraleda finds natural and invented languages elicit similar responses in the brain’s language-processing network. mcgovern.mit.edu/2025/03/18/to-…

Super excited about Cory's Cory Shain work showing that you can recover the language network via func connectivity methods from ~any fMRI data. A massive effort using all the data ever collected in my lab from neurotypical participants! Go, Cory!

As a child growing up in the former Soviet Union, Ev (like in 'evidence', not Eve) Fedorenko 🇺🇦 studied English, French, German, Polish, and Spanish. Today she is is working to decipher the internal structure and functions of the brain’s language-processing machinery. news.mit.edu/2025/evelina-f…

Accepting the first of two 2025 Troland Research Awards is Evelina Fedorenko of MIT Brain and Cognitive Sciences, for groundbreaking contributions and insights into the language network in the human brain. 🧠 #NASaward #NAS162 Watch now: ow.ly/R6gP50VIsih
