In toxic cultures, time off is a reward earned by working to exhaustion. Burnout is proof of commitment, and vacations are required to recover. In healthy cultures, time off is a right granted to everyone. Well-being is a top priority, and vacations are encouraged to rejuvenate.

There are far too many chatty people on this 7am Monday morning commuter train.

Have spent the last two Wednesdays at Leadership Dynamics training, organised by Talon. Great to have time to step away from the day job and learn how to be a more effective manager, and even better to work for a company that prioritises investing in its people.

Saying no is not as costly as you expect. 11 studies: people overestimate the relationship and reputation risks of turning down requests. People generally don't hold it against you. Declining doesn't mean you don't care. It means you're taking care not to overextend yourself.

A common source of disappointment is recency bias: weighing the last week more heavily than the last year. Zooming in on the immediate past magnifies slumps. Zooming out farther reveals upward slopes. Progress is rarely visible at a snapshot in time. It unfolds over a lifetime.
