For many years, there has been a general outcry on the learning levels of children in Nigeria. The number of out-of-school children and the general quality of education had come under intense scrutiny and criticism. And so, we The Education Partnership (TEP) Centre decided to do something about it.
We launched LEARNigeria, a citizen-led assessment, advocacy and action programme that assesses children, aged 5 – 15, on foundational literacy and numeracy skills based on the Nigerian curriculum.
LEARNigeria The programme was designed to generate empirical data that can inform and inspire targeted interventions. Over 49,000 children from 21,600 households were surveyed across 6 states in Nigeria (Akwa-Ibom, Kano, Taraba, Ebonyi, Plateau and Lagos) in the first installment.
LEARNigeria In Akwa-Ibom state, 6,943 children were surveyed. 90% of the children surveyed were currently enrolled in school, while 10% had never been enrolled. 0% had dropped out.
