Even if you have the socio economic privilege to live alone, our society attaches considerable psychological stigma to it. Being single is seen either as a sign that someone is too arrogant or self obsessed to ‘settle’ or that you’re too undesirable to get anyone to love you.

Even newer films like Pagglait or Thappad which show a woman breaking out of a family mould show it more as an act of rebellion - not bad ofc. But Manju Mai in Laapata Ladies goes further - not only is it possible to be a single woman, it can actually be an act of HAPPINESS

Laapata Ladies is lovely for many reasons but this dialogue really stood out to me. One may think the film’s feminist lessons are intuitive to us urban elite but the way it frames the act of being alone as an act of being happy is actually a radical departure from other films
