Hyrax certified seed crop looking good. Thankful not to have too many crops as advanced as this; likely to be a long haul until the Short Rains.

Huge variation in soil types across this field. Certainly an interesting test for the Team Novag Planet barley going in after three consecutive broadleaf crops - linseed, sunflowers and peas - so no excuses!

Sunflowers looking promising; very little Sclerotinia despite the wet July & August 👍 Definitely more lodging and brackling where population is low and heads are too large 👎 Non-precision planting = avoid pendulous, droop head varieties.

Not pleased with the sclerotinia in these sunflowers, but it is important to keep things in perspective and avoid recency bias when making cropping decisions. Right variety, right crop but unlucky with the (very) unseasonal July & August rain.

Really enjoying these faba beans. We've gone from "hurry up and ripen before November" to "take as long as you like so we can combine you after the Short Rains". Late maturing crops are definitely challenging our mindsets and keeping living roots in the soil for longer.

Peas have had some serious weather on them in the 158 days since planting, but very impressed by how the Convio headers are picking them up. Newer varieties have vastly improved quality and colour retention too.

Jazz canola has grown quite full at 18 plants/m². Not an ideal population, but it has certainly compensated. Hoping to eek out every last bit of seed fill and hit that all-important 6g TGW through the final weeks.

Horizon 9m doing an awesome job putting canola under the surface. Huge wins for the farmer and for soil protection and water quality on these slopes when it rains heavily.

Soil mineral Nitrogen cores; my annual reminder of how and why I went from Controlled Traffic cynic to evangelist by experiencing the difference in compaction between two farms with a soil auger.

Why we very seldom see responses to inoculant in trials on these high OM, alpine acrisols. Fantastic nodulation on these peas.

Jazz, the most flexible phenology of any canola variety I've ever seen. Thank goodness for August rainfall on this very late sown crop, but the variety has definitely made the most of it.

Variations in canopy cover and competitiveness starting to show up in the canola trial, with Velocity TT and Trifecta TT giving a good contrast.

Early Blazer looking fantastic. Solid workhorse variety. Lumen good but a few areas to up our game on to extract the most from this very high yielding, high oil content canola.

Barley on the turn. Plan is to harvest and plant straight to lupins, then follow with canola in the main season of 2025. Double break should confuse the grass weeds.

720 ears/m² and just about still standing. Time to go more radical next year😈 Wheat has matured surprisingly quickly this year, will be interesting to see how the barley behaves.
