I've covered campus activism since the late 90s. Nothing that's happening on campuses now -- sit ins, building takeovers, encampments -- is at all outside the standard vernacular of student protest.

In the spring of 1985 we padlocked the front doors of Hamilton Hall, renaming it Mandela Hall, and encamped on the steps for three weeks. Columbia divested from South Africa in the fall of 1985.

Divestment from weapons manufacturing, fossil fuel industries, and the wider military-fossil-industrial complex is what students solidarity protests have demanded from their universities for a while. Now we urgently to ask why can’t university divest from warfare & genocide?

All Columbia University faculty are currently locked out of our own campus. The only way out of the situation, let alone to keep our students safe, is for faculty to be involved, but we can’t even get through the gates.

Today locked out of offices. Not just a place of work but the place we define by our teaching and research without which it is literally nothing more than a bunch of badly managed assets and a hospital.
