Happy to share the latest work of our lab showing the severe consequences of damage-stalled Pol II. Great work of Camila and Barbara! academic.oup.com/nar/advance-ar…

A reminder that I'm looking for a PhD student and a postdoc to study DNA repair using structural biology and single-molecule imaging. A wonderful department in a beautiful city and exciting projects ready to dive into! sites.google.com/view/alconlab/…

Wouldn’t it be great to test how individual transcription factors engage with their motif in the nucleus? We tried exactly that in a study lead by Ralph (Ralph Grand) and Marco (Marco Pregnolato) now out in Molecular Cell authors.elsevier.com/sd/article/S10…. 1/7

Cells turn genes on and off with the help of transcription factors, but binding to DNA is complex. Marco Pregnolato, Ralph Grand and others in the Schübeler Lab found that these factors act more variably than expected, sometimes displacing nucleosomes only in certain regions 🧬

The SNSF applauds the conclusion of the negotiations with the EU. Researchers in Switzerland can participate in almost all calls for proposals in the 2025 programme year of #Horizon Europe under a transitional arrangement. ➡️ lnkd.in/dViBEy_5

Thank you to Shigeo Murata and Kazu Iwai for writing this heartfelt obituary for Keiji Tanaka, who played such important roles in the early characterization of the proteasome and building the vibrant protein degradation community in Japan. cell.com/cell/fulltext/…

Fresh from the oven - "PML mutants from arsenic-resistant patients reveal SUMO1-TOPORS and SUMO2/3-RNF4 degradation pathways" very nice story from Ron's lab. happy to be able to contribute a bit :) rupress.org/jcb/article/22…

Another study showing the cooperating STUbL activity between RNF4 and TOPORS in a week, supporting our findings published last year! So nice to see more studies on TOPORS :)

I feel like I'm seeing more of a basic science tilt in industry at the same time as academia is tilting more toward translation. That's okay, but keep in mind that the incentive structure of academia—high risk, long reward horizons—are conditions in which basic science thrives.

Vertegaal highlights recent work from Jaffray et al. (hubs.la/Q03m0rQ70), describing how a machinery of #ubiquitin, SUMO1, & -2/3, as well as SUMO-targeted ubiquitin ligases TOPORS & RNF4, degrades the oncogene PML following arsenic treatment. hubs.la/Q03m0sBQ0

Excited to see this published with additional data following our preprint a while back. Cool combination (in our biased view) of controlled TF expression and machine learning to decode chromatin sensitivity. sciencedirect.com/science/articl….
