Today I tested positive for Covid. Again. The second time in two months, the third time since January 2022. I live in the UK, a country that has washed its hands of the virus (although sadly not literally). We no longer need to test to enter.

We also don’t need to mask. Anywhere. I am often the lone masker at the grocery store, at the gym, in the audience at the theatre. I’m an opera singer. Attending theatre, meeting colleagues, my career in general has been pretty much decimated these past years.

I have been vaccinated many times over. And I keep getting sick. And theatres, they keep testing. They test even when to enter the country you don’t need to test. They test even though we are living in societies where no one else is masking except us performers.

Because, if we test positive, we don’t get paid. For anything. Months or preparation? Nope. The fact that may even have attended rehearsals? Nope. If we test positive, we are not allowed to perform. So, it seems to me that we are the ones still being screwed.

What is the solution? I’ve done everything I can to keep both myself and those around me safe, and I still keep getting sick because no one else seemingly cares. It seems that my career also doesn’t care about the fact that we cannot live in a bubble.

Theatres, if we are healthy enough to perform, must we keep testing? Pre-pandemic, if someone was selfish enough to show up to rehearsal with a little tickle or a sneeze, would we have asked them to leave?

Should we continue to test in theatres where the country policy has no testing or masking? We are already putting so much on the line to do our jobs, to have it suddenly taken away without any compensation, is that right? I will continue to mask, to get my boosters, but

at what point can we allow performers to do their jobs without the fear of losing it due to Covid? I’m really curious to know what everyone thinks about this. I’m so torn.
