Pro-choice people pushing for an abortion law in Canada need to take a breath.

There's a reason no major reproductive rights organization in Canada is pushing for this. In actual fact, the only people really organizing for a law are anti-choice.

Abortion is a medical procedure. Abortion is healthcare. We do not have laws around miscarriage. We do not have laws around heart attacks. We do not have laws around facial reconstructive surgery.

'Canada needs a law' is treating the US reality as our own. It's not.

Literally the only time I see slogans around 'Canada needs an abortion law' is on the placards held by misogynists at anti-choice rallies.

So, if you support abortion rights and you are adopting this slogan today, I implore you to rethink your strategy.

Stop wasting precious energy fighting for a law that we don't need, and that would absolutely set us back in our discussions, and instead fight for abortion access; access is literally the primary concern in Canada. Put your energy there or sit this one out.

I understand people are fired up and this stuff is not obvious.

But I founded Radical Handmaids with my friends in 2012. I sat on the board of ARCC-CDAC for years. I've helped defeat 2 anti-choice bills.

Please listen to experts and don't fall into the misogynist trap.

Stop asking Trudeau/Singh to codify abortion rights into law. Instead, push them to hold provinces accountable for the fact that they are not providing adequate access.

Without access, there is no choice.
