Can we call it a meritocracy when students who grow up in wealthy neighborhoods with elite schools and test prep get admitted because of high test scores over a student who grew up with no advantages, worked their tail off in inferior schools but scored lower on a test?

Affirmative action programs were created to address the legacy of slavery -- of 350 years of legal discrimination and exclusion-- not just generalized disadvantage. But we've allowed these conversations to become murky and SCOTUS has ruled remedying past discrim isn't allowed.

National election days are stark reminders of the injustice of the nearly 700,000 DC residents, who pay the same federal taxes as residents of states, having no voting representation in Congress and only limited, revocable local self-governing authority.
