On the way to the historic village on Scottish Wildlife Trust Handa I was excited to hear drumming snipe, singing lesser redpoll and to see two golden plover in their summer plumage.

As soon as we arrived at the Scottish Wildlife Trust visitor centre at Handa Island we were greeted by two Bonxies fighting over a crab, as well as more arctic tern, wheatear & a few rabbits.

When we arrived at Tarbet we saw these greylag with gosling & a common sandpiper flew past. On the boat we got great views of Arctic tern, black guillemot, guillemot, eider, gannet & red throated diver.

I spent a fantastic day at Scottish Wildlife Trust Handa Island on Saturday with RSPB Scotland

I added 6 new birds to my year list which now stands at 170

✅ Puffin
✅ Black throated diver
✅ Great Skua
✅ Arctic Skua
✅ Black Guillemot
✅ Arctic Tern

Only ever heard or seen glimpses of cuckoo flying past so I was so excited today to finally get a photo of a cuckoo. It was a distance away so not the greatest shot but still happy with it! Takes my year list up to 164 after also ticking Swift & Common Sandpiper #birdsseenin2024

A journal entry for a great day that I spent at RSPB Rainham Marshes

The amazing calls of the whooper swans at RSPB Scotland Strathbeg earlier this year. I don’t think I’d ever seen so many in one place before. An amazing sight & sound.

I am heading to Handa Island next weekend with RSPB Scotland so I have been practicing sketching puffins. Hope that there’s lots of them there to see🤞🏻

After a report of an avocet on Thursday, I was very happy to see it yesterday in front of Castle Stuart less than 5 miles from home. I’ve never seen one in Scotland before.

Every year around April/May I see Whimbrel at my local patch. It’s great to see them back again this year & to see 10 birds, which is the most I have counted. I enjoyed focusing on them in my latest #journal & getting these flight shots.

This is believed to be the famous breeding male, Laddie (LM12).

Such a surprise to have a pair of linnet in the garden today. A first ever for the garden. Have been putting out alpaca fur for the birds to use for nesting material & it seems like this pair were attracted by it.
