Frank Field was one of the great intellectual and moral leaders of the British left.

Here is a passage from his book on how his Christian faith shaped his politics.

Rest in peace.

This is a brilliant and much needed article giving the left case against assisted dying/suicide.

Well worth a read.

'Then he said to Thomas, 'Put your finger here; see my hands. Reach out your hand and put it into my side. Stop doubting and believe'.' John 20:27.

🧵 Whatever your views on assisted dying, one thing I’d hoped we’d all agree on is that the topic is ethically fraught & complex.

Not so Matthew Parris.

For him, it’s simple. Old & frail people *should* be killed - to save society the cost of looking after them. 1/n

I was undecided on assisted dying (leaning against) until I read this. The “do your bit for society and die” argument is dreadful and has pushed me further into the no camp.

I used to support legalising assisted dying, but arguments like this - along with the horrifying example offered by Canada - have completely reversed my opinion

On Easter weekend Christians remember a story that puts the inherent value and dignity of humanity at the centre. A story that tells every person that they have value.

Parris' raw utilitarianism offers a very different and imo disturbing alternative. thetimes.co.uk/article/7ac1f4…

As a Christian I believe things that are dead can come back to life. That’s the point of the story after all. As G.K. Chesterton wrote: ‘Christianity has died many times and risen again; for it had a God who knew the way out of the grave.’ Justin Brierley
