The joy of explaining to PhD students that their entire supervisory team is now at risk of redundancy. 😡😡

University crisis. I've read article after article on this, which rightly mention inflation & tuition fees, & international students, but few mention the dog-eat-dog removal of the student cap. Quite a few Hums depts would not be facing current cuts if the cap was still in place

I’m not angry we’re out of the title race, truth is, this season, we’ve probably been punching above our weight. It’s just the timing of being out of it, being so close but yet so far is what hurts. But more importantly for me, this won’t define an absolutely amazing Klopp era!

We at the Review mourn the loss of Helen Vendler (1933–2024). In celebration of her life and work, we’ve unlocked her Art of Criticism interview from our archive.

When did dissertations get abbreviated to a diss? Asking for a friend who convenes two “diss” modules, the friend being me!

So ideas for lunch in Sheffield on Mondays? Lots of my usual haunts are obviously closed at the beginning of the week. An indie in town or within 10 mins drive? Help Sheffield

Many things I love knowing about Helen Vendler: her childhood friendship with Sylvia Plath, the fact she was one of the few literary critics Elizabeth Bishop ever read, her many essays of course.

The first appearance in the New York Times of the term 'close reading' as we understand it today was used by Helen Vendler in 1970 in a review of a book by Randall Jarrell

Of course Liverpool will find another manager, maybe even more successful, who knows, but they won't find someone who fits like this fella.
