Civics ed is a hot topic these days but most people seem to think it's the university's job to do it. I just published an (open access) article arguing that political parties have historically been the greatest schools of civic ed in America. Check it out! mdpi.com/2075-471X/14/1…

In a republic, we should honor and promote statesmanship, but our models should not all be presidents. It's time to develop a theory of legislative statesmanship and honor legislative statesmen. civitasinstitute.org/research/a-cal…

in my 15+ years covering congress, i've never seen the leadership cancel a vote, send lawmakers home and then abruptly switch course and put the vote up. all within the course of about 10 minutes.

The Federalist papers on Congress & the Presidency are filled with concern about instability and mutability in the laws. That's why their system did not allow the President to change law on a whim. Recent events have illustrated why they were right. civitasinstitute.org/research/a-tar…

Something about this story just reminds me about how democracy is supposed to work: a Democratic Senator had a pet peeve about feral cows and held up a USDA nomination until the Biden administration just killed them. That's good dealmaking on both sides.

Honored to write an essay in this issue responding to Yuval Levin's (excellent) latest book. My essay distinguishes Madisonian party responsibility (good) from Wilsonian "responsible party government" (not good). Madison wasn't anti-party, he was a moderate defender of parties.
