Sign Language Studies has published a set of memoirs by some of the pioneers of sign language linguistics. I particularly recommend the article by 4 of the first deaf linguists (Supalla, Padden, Bahan, and Wallin) in a field dominated by hearing people. muse.jhu.edu/issue/52076
