The Tripitaka Koreana - carved on 81258 woodblocks in the 13th century - is the most successful large data transfer over time yet achieved by humankind. 52 million characters of information, transmitted over nearly 8 centuries with zero data loss - an unequalled achievement. 1/

Continuing with the theme that #culturalanalytics is happening all over the place, here is a piece in the Journal of Social Robotics that studies "representations of #AI in science fiction." link.springer.com/content/pdf/10…

🤖 Meta (= Facebook) announced a new "language model" today, trained on millions of scientific papers. Judging from examples in the HN discussion, it's hilariously bad. Language models should model language, not "knowledge." news.ycombinator.com/item?id=336112…

In LLMs, the need for "prompt engineering" is a sign of *lack* of robust language understanding. It will be interesting to see if scaling LLMs alone will reduce the need for prompt engineering.

I loved this piece personally, and today it led to a terrific discussion in my #digitalhumanities grad seminar. Didn't think I would assign it as a teaching text, but I will now. Half of the students are creative writers, and this spoke to them. newyorker.com/tech/annals-of…

This is an amazing investigation of the books that are “known” in ChatGPT’s training data 📚 “Whose language, and whose lived experiences…is captured in their knowledge of the world?…Whose narratives inform the implicit knowledge of these models?” arxiv.org/abs/2305.00118

🚀Pioneering collaboration provides an entirely new perspective on century of Tudor history! New book from Ruth Ahnert and Sebastian Ahnert brings to light the complex power dynamics, the spy-craft, and the intrigues that defined the Tudor era (1509-1603). bit.ly/3Qok3aN

if you're in literary studies and wondering why machine learning might be valuable, here's a quick primer. From this article that goes into greater depth. muse.jhu.edu/pub/1/article/…
