In his Book Review, Brandon Hasbrouck expands upon Jeffrey Bellin’s Mass Incarceration Nation, and contends that American prisons promulgate repressive policies and represent a grave threat as laboratories of antidemocracy when exporting these policies to the body politic.

The Fourth of July is about celebrating the big, bold, inclusive experiment that is our American democracy. And it has always been an experiment. Our democracy has never been guaranteed, which means we can’t take it for granted. We need to keep fighting for it, keep improving it,
There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy. Although we don’t yet know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt, and use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics.
