🧵🚽A new analysis by San Diego State University researchers documents lacking public restroom access downtown and how it’s impacting the area’s growing unsheltered population. bathrooms.sdsu.edu/publications/

My remarks re:providing more restrooms in downtown #SanDiego to prevent contamination problems, instead of paying a private contractor to clean & manage public sidewalks It's also a matter of basic respect for the unsheltered people who need restrooms the same as everyone else.

Our latest report reveals that less than half of Downtown San Diego’s permanent restroom facilities could be considered “truly open access.” With just two 24/7 permanent facilities, there's a ratio of 1 toilet to 190 unsheltered individuals at night. 🚽 drive.google.com/file/d/1pnUDgj…

If you're in San Diego, please consider sharing your thoughts with us on public restrooms! We are interested in all different viewpoints. Your responses are anonymous.

Of the 22 permanent public restrooms in Downtown San Diego, only 2 locations (with a total of 9 toilets) are open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. At night, there is approximately 1 permanent toilet for every 215 unsheltered people — growing from 1:190 since December 2022.

Had a great time presenting a portion of my master’s thesis at the SDSU Research Student Symposium! After countless hours working on my project in the 24/7 Area, it was only fitting that I earned the SDSU Library Award! 📚 School of Public Affairs PSFA at SDSU

Researchers told the San Diego City Council to decriminalize things like blocking a sidewalk or sleeping where it's not allowed. It only causes more harm. Less than 48 hours later, top city officials doubled down. inewsource.org/2023/03/31/san…

.Project for Sanitation Justice found the majority of restrooms adjacent to the trolley stops were along the Blue Line, which runs from University City to the border, and the fewest along the Green Line, which runs from East Village to Santee. More graphics and maps: tinyurl.com/muf4xr8r

This month’s data report on homelessness inflow and outflow from RTFH is now available. Our findings show that in March, 1226 individuals were housed while 1337 individuals experienced homelessness for the first time. 1/

In our Punishment and Society article, we conceptualize and visualize how deliberate sanitation deprivation in urban environments functions as a punishment regime inflicted on residents, especially unhoused residents, to the detriment of public health and safety. 🚽 journals.sagepub.com/doi/10.1177/14…

Must read new article Punishment and Society conceptualizing "Sanitation Justice" in relation to human and environmental rights of the houseless. Project for Sanitation Justice details mechanisms of sanitation deprivation that complements my work w/ colleagues on the weaponization of sanitation in sweeps.
