A prepared scientist is a successful scientist! Last week Science Museum of Minnesota scientists from the SCW Research Station visited Lake of the Woods to collect samples. It wasn't a warm day, but #MarkEdlund was prepared! These data points help determine why harmful algal blooms form on the lake.
Happy #FossilFriday! This is Homotherium, the Scimitar-toothed Cat Science Museum of Minnesota. Full skull was found in Texas, but the rear skull (left) was found in #Minnesota! This lion-sized cat stalked prey ~27,000 years ago! You can vote for State Fossil at new.smm.org/dino-days/mn-s…
Thanks for having us and sparking such great conversations, Twin Cities Startup Week (TCSW)! Here's our Chair of Science, Laurie Kleinbaum Fink, Ph.D., talking all about food + science during the session we hosted (and if you were there, you know we have some exciting exhibit news) 😉
Science isn't only about sitting in a lab analyzing samples. Sometimes you need to get your hands wet, improvise in the field, and drive fun vehicles. These are Science Museum of Minnesota scientists from SCW Research Station looking for more evidence of an invasive diatom, didymo, or Rock Snot.
Curious about some of the objects in Science Museum of Minnesota's collection? Look at this beautiful shawl! We take care of over 2 million objects so that future generations can learn from them too. See more objects via the museum's specimen spotlight... new.smm.org/learn/specimen…
#science is all of us… Thank you Science Museum of Minnesota for highlighting Real STEM Stories
End of something truly wonderful in the world of museums. I salute those who spoke out in support of a different outcome. Some of my best memories were made at the Levine Museum of the New South and where I met the most badass, visionary museum workers. charlotte.axios.com/293174/levine-…
As an Institute on the Environment UMN Fellow, I'm proud of their cross-disciplinary and collaborative approach to tackle environmental issues that can feel overwhelming. Solutions are possible. #EarthDay
Happy Earth Day! Learn more about what we are doing Science Museum of Minnesota to make real and necessary change. new.smm.org/action/drive-c… For example, the museum has reduced its use of electricity for nine years in a row by using energy more efficiently. #EarthDay
A chance to learn about Science Museum of Minnesota research at the SCW Research Station. This article is about a great collaboration to study Rock Snot, which is showing up in North Shore streams. It doesn't belong there. "It fundamentally changes what's happening in those streams." --Mark Edlund
And that’s a wrap! For the past year, the Anthro dept Science Museum of Minnesota has been rehabbing a legacy collection from the Pedersen site in SW MN. What was 34 unorganized boxes of undigitized artifacts is now 28 organized boxes of 119,006 cataloged, rehoused, and digitized artifacts.
I had an opportunity to visit Science Museum of Minnesota scientists in the field today. It is a beautiful spot and today is a beautiful day. They are finding evidence of people living at the site around 700 CE. I look forward to learning more!
Come check out the new Community Curator exhibit Science Museum of Minnesota! BIPOC community members toured SMM’s collections, chose and wrote about objects that resonated with them, which are displayed in the lobby. This case will change monthly, with a new curator featured each month!
I’m thankful for great colleagues Science Museum of Minnesota in the Center for Research and Collections. They are at the museum on a Saturday morning sharing their work. SCW Research Station
The #AAM2023 general session shared a tribute to Cinnamon Catlin-Legutko, late Director of the Illinois State Museum, honored with the Award for Distinguished Service to Museums. Cinnamon used her power to change lives, inspire movements, and challenge status quos—and is greatly missed.
