"On the feasibility of #glacier preservation" - the title of my World view just out in Nature Water nature.com/articles/s4422… Simple take-away: No, we can't preserve glaciers artificially at larger scales! But yes, we can partly save them by limiting CO2-emissions.

Rising seas will cause more frequent coastal flooding For some Pacific states, floods will go from <5 days a yr in 1980-2010s, to once a fortnight on average by 2050, and every 2-3 DAYS(!) in worst case! Info in new report by António Guterres #Climate Team is truly terrifying

Rock #glaciers in the western USA have accelerated 2–3 fold over the past 60-70 years due to increasing air temperatures. Warming has likely decreased the viscosity of the frozen debris through ground warming and meltwater infiltration. nature.com/articles/s4146…

The recent export figures look interesting. Between January and July 2024, #AZE 🇦🇿 exported to the #UK🇬🇧 650,1 tonnes of crude oil 🛢️and oil products, amounting to $390 million, which is 3.5 times higher than in 2023. As of today, the 🇬🇧 is the seventh biggest importer of Azeri

Moody weather on a dying #glacier. We conducted GLAMOS measurements on Plaine Morte today. "Dark" is the best word to describe our impressions. Despite lots of snow in winter, the ice loss was substantial - once again 😢

Highly interesting structures in #glacier ice. No, it's not a borehole but fully natural. Any idea how this formed? Maybe a recrystallised, deformed crevasse?

The terminus of Vadret da Morteratsch, largest #glacier of Eastern 🇨🇭, has completely changed in just 1 year. What used to be a gentle edge of the ice has retreated into a vertical 20 m ice wall with a river/lake in front. Scenic, but another brutal expression of climate change

I am running out of words to describe how absurd August 2024 was in Svalbard. Reaching an average temperature of 11°C in August would have been unimaginable just a few years ago. This is totally bonkers.
