Beautiful screen by Tojin Ojih Odutola in the Nigerian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. Done with pastels and charcoal. So skilled. Tojin comes from Ife. In the 15th century, artists from Ife were making some of the finest sculpture ever made. Something in the water?

St Wilgofortis by Hieronymus Bosch from the Accademia Galleryin Venice. Followed by more Wilgofortises. Note the beard! Wilgofortis pledged herself to Jesus. But her dad tried to marry her off to a pagan prince. So god gave her a beard to ward off suitors. The dad crucified her!

WALDEMAR JANUSZCZAK What a brilliant thing - ultimately the bronzes will be returned - some perhaps will remain borrowed indefinitely - lots of pressing matters facing the incoming gov but would be great to see it take on a leading role in return of important artifacts

Yinka Shonibare in the Nigerian Pavilion at the Venice Biennale. These are terracotta facsimiles of all the Benin bronzes stolen by the British army and now scattered about Britain’s museums. Especially the British Museum itself. Pyramid of shame!

On the right, Canaletto’s view of the Arsenale in Venice. On the left, Waldemar Januszczak’s view of the Arsenale in Venice. “These days”, said Waldemar, “Canaletto speaks through me.”

One of my childhood sporting heroes was cricketer Derek Underwood. Then, 25 years after he retired, I was at Canterbury's ground with my son who was 11. We took his bat and I bowled to him for hours on the grass by a bush. Then I said I wanted to watch the game for a while.

I hope it’s different from all the other museums of modern art in the world. There’s an international sameness to contemporary aesthetics. Artists have become globally interchangeable, as if contemporary art has become the western world’s most successful colonising force.

Desperately sad news.
Museums are treasure houses of objects and knowledge, founts of inspiration for future generations, places of wonder - and research. Places that invite us to see ourselves in a deep, wide context.
Our society and culture is impoverished if we lose them.…

Actually, I’m making a film about this painting in the Art Mysteries series. Sky Arts this summer. Finally decoding what it’s all about. Spoiler - no, Bosch was not on drugs!

Angela Rayner & I both grew up in poverty on council estates. We both left school without any qualifications. We both worked hard against almost insurmountable odds to get where we are today & we both now hold a truth twisting, law breaking government to account.

No wonder…
