Great to see Vigur and Vigurbreiður included as part of the maritime display in Reykjavik harbour - but a pity the information is incorrect. The boat has been on Vigur since the 1820s at which time it was already described as ‘old’…

Now that the skies have cleared we’re finally able to enjoy the incredible northern lights that everyone has been talking about…much as we love the colourful display, we think the clear view of the stars up here is almost as dazzling as the aurora!

The highway agency of Iceland @Vegagerdin owns and is responsible for the pier on Vigur but it has been a while since it has received any attention. It has become part of our routine to patch it up best we can to face each winter, then piece together whatever is left each spring.

@quarkexpeditions had great weather for their late-season visit to Vigur. Passengers on the way to Greenland on #OceanAdventurer stopped by to enjoy great seal watching, history, eiderdown farming and Gísli was on hand to explain the proper way to tackle some Icelandic delicacies

Autumn colours and a partial supermoon…feels odd to see the moon rise, as if it’s too soon. We’ve only been getting dark at night since late August…

He’s been there all along but we’ve only just spotted him - isn’t he fabulous? Roman nose, whistling and a very long chin!

Very excited to have master stone expert Guðjón Kristinsson visit us on Vigur to look at some of our historic stone walls and structures. Guðjón could tell so much just by looking at the stones. It was fascinating and we very much look forward to his return next summer 🤞

Delighted for Icelandic-Italian artist, Emilia Von Telese whose drypoint etching “View of Vigur, West Fjords, Iceland” has been selected by the Royal Society of Painters-Printmakers for their International Print exhibition this coming November, at Bankside Gallery, London.

Disaster. The recent storms have decimated the pier - the only access on and off the island. The pier belongs to @Vegagerdin who are responsible for maintaining it. Ever since arriving on Vigur in 2020 we’ve raised the alarm about the condition of the pier - now it’s a crisis.

We spent a few days off-island and returned to find the doors had blown off the barn! We lost more of the pier too 🫣. Looks like this is going to be a costly winter…

Lovely lift to a difficult week to receive these messages of appreciation from Janice May and Margaret Price. Thank you for the delicious goodies and for the books which we’ve been thoroughly enjoying. It is very generous of you both to remember us x

While parts of the island are being eaten away by the sea, elsewhere the sea is pelting it with a barrage of rocks flung onto shore by the waves. Doing what we can to minimise damage is exhausting but these are still happy days exploring - particularly when the sun shines!

The BBC Natural History Unit came to film eider ducks on Vigur. The footage can now be watched on Apple TV+ as part of the second episode of The Secret Lives of Animals (the bit featuring Vigur starts about 15 minutes into the episode)... tv.apple.com/gb/show/the-se…
