The forces behind this day played the long game while many Americans slept in denial. This day was sealed in 2016. And this is the start not the end. The question now, as it has always been, is: what kind of country do we want to be & what are we willing to do to achieve it?

How unconscious bias works in our society: adolescence accorded a White gunman but manly accountability for an unarmed Black teenager.

This is not ancient history. This was in the lifetime of people alive today. Our country is like a patient with a preexisting condition that we ignore at our own peril. And it’s time we look beneath the surface at the history we inherited if we are to understand our current era.

I remember the exact moment I discovered each insane code of the caste system and the absurdities of Jim Crow while researching Warmth: the ban on checkers between Blacks & Whites, separate bibles in the courtroom. Even corpses in the morgue were segregated. It was a sickness.

We are now intubating patients on the floor. And people are dying in the ED bc they can’t get an ICU bed fast enough. Yet, the general public still doesn’t care. Mind boggling. 🤯

“Greenwood represented all the best of what was possible for Black people in America – and for all the people. No one cared about us for almost 100 years. We, and our history, have been forgotten, washed away. This Congress must recognize us and our history.”

“I am a survivor of the Tulsa race massacre. Two weeks ago, I celebrated my 107th birthday. Today, I’m visiting Washington, DC for the first time in my life. I’m here seeking justice, and I'm asking my country to acknowledge what happened in Tulsa in 1921.”

Isabel Wilkerson You did it again! Just finished . You are a talented wordsmith & a master narrator, penetrating the soul to the fullest, (un)knowingly eliciting emotions ranging from fury to empathy to action. Humanity is better off every time that you touch a keyboard. 🥰

This dude argued a century ago in the US Supreme Court that Indians are practically white. He didn't win. But a century later, the is real. And we best acknowledge it instead of acting like we are the best demographic in the country.
