Writing about samplers that teach needlework and other subjects together. Mary Ann Sadler’s long division sampler is from the The Metropolitan Museum of Art, astronomy sampler is from V&A, Ruth Hodges Witticombe’s geography sampler is from Witney Antiques, Iliad sampler is from Fitzwilliam Museum
Today I saw Rembrandt’s 1635-37 drawings of women teaching babies to walk at British Museum. They’re some of my favourite depictions of pudding caps! You can really feel the tenderness and care. I also fell in love with Adriaen van Ostade’s 1672 depiction of a woman sewing
I must get myself to Gawthorpe Hall ASAP!!
Visited the Rijksmuseum today on our speedy jaunt through Amsterdam. Here are some of my many faves: a variety of undergarments, 17th-c. beadwork box, 1647 heraldic tunic, and c. 1660 painting by Vermeer, with a depiction of a woman sewing in her doorway which made me emotional
Details from some newly-accessioned items in the Royal School of Needlework collection. These are from a late 18th-century waistcoat and a 1920s dress. It’s such a gift to be able to spend time with and study these objects!
