“A Clockwork Orange,” by Anthony Burgess.

I first read it when I was 12.

I was visiting Memphis, Tennessee, at the time.

It is written in a fictional futuristic English dialect. A reader must decode the novel’s language through context.

Reading this book made me smarter.

These are the Jane Austen novels owned by Anthony Burgess's first wife Llewela Wilson (usually known as Lynne). Lynne once fell ill on holiday in Morocco. To help her recover, William S. Burroughs read Austen to her in a sombre tone. Just what the doctor ordered.
