Our #RuleOfLaw Report 2024 is out!   It's the 5th in a row; since 2020 the Report has become a credible and respected tool for a preventive dialogue w/ Member States against backsliding of our #democracy.   A novelty this year is that we are adding four #enlargement countries.🧵

3⃣ Media: There are improvements but we also see the deterioration of the situation in some countries. #MediaFreedomAct will be a game-changer when the new rules are applicable.

4⃣ Checks and balances are a natural test of a balance of power in the society. We see civil society facing attacks and legal restrictions to their operations and this is a worrying trend.

The European Commission has a number of tools at its disposal to ensure respect for #RuleOfLaw in EU Member States. The #RuleOfLaw Report & annual Rule of Law Cycle complement the other instruments in the EU's Rule of Law Toolbox. Read more ↓
