Journalists from the IndyStar, James Briggs and Hayleigh Colombo give behind the scenes info into how they started down the path for their award-winning work. Colombo talks about all the unseen evidence gathering that happens in order to responsibly move forward with a story.


All journalists sharing how long the process is for great investigative work. Mirror Indy’s Tyler Fenwick, Jenna Watson and Emily Hopkins is reporting for Mirror Indy discuss putting time into building a body of knowledge — so many documents — and from a visual perspective just building trust with sources.


The “how” is hard because these pieces take time. Hayleigh Colombo says let go of the idea you’re going to have dedicated time, because you likely won’t. Instead, what can be done in 30 minutes, a much more reasonable ask to beleaguered editors and news directors. Indiana Pro SPJ
