#PRECISEKenya held a PRECISE Air Quality Dissemination Meeting in Kilifi, Kenya on April 3rd which shed light on air pollution, particularly its impact on pregnant women and children in Kenya. The meeting included health stakeholders from Rabai and Kaloleni sub-counties.

The #PRECISEAirQuality study aimed to determine how #MaternalHealth and #ChildHealth are influenced by interior and exterior air quality. The study collected data on various sources of air pollution (eg. Fuel source for cooking and lighting) from over 3500 pregnant women.

107 women participated in the study by carrying #airquality sensors for 5 days, providing real-time data on PM2.5 concentration levels they are exposed to daily. Preliminary findings showed that all women were exposed to high air pollution levels. #EnvironmentalHealth

Women using wood fuel for cooking had the highest exposure to pollution, more than those using charcoal, while women using gas or kerosene had the lowest exposures. Women residing in Rabai were exposed to higher pollution levels than those in Mariakani. #CleanCooking

The findings highlight the urgent need for interventions to mitigate air pollution, especially in communities relying on wood as a primary cooking fuel. The attendees co-designed community-led interventions to address indoor and outdoor air pollution to improve health outcomes.

📢 Great news! Our PRECISE_network research team started a series of community dissemination meetings this week. The team shared their preliminary findings with over 165 dedicated community health promoters and community health assistants in Mariakani and Rabai, Kilifi county.

Honouring their commitment to community engagement, the team used #ParticipatoryResearch for the sessions by holding candid conversations with participants who provided their reflections and recommendations based on the #PRECISE study findings.
