#OTD in 1987, USS Stark (FFG-31) was hit by 2 Exocet missiles fired by an Iraqi aircraft. 37 sailors were killed and another 21 were wounded. Iraq claimed the pilot mistook the frigate for an Iranian tanker. The crew's valiant damage control efforts saved the ship from sinking.

Navsource states the tanker is USS Salamonie (AO 26) and the date as September 1, 1942.

I believe this to be incorrect for a few reasons.
1. Salamonie was in Hampton Roads on 9/1 and didn’t enter the Pacific until mid 1944

Today, 17 May 2024, marks the 80th anniversary of the launching of Operation Transom, an airstrike carried out against Japanese bases at Surabaya by the aircraft carriers Illustrious and Saratoga.

One month earlier, these same two warships had carried out a similar strike
