“Many of us became scholars because we hoped to contribute to knowledge that would help change the inequality…Discovering that, rather than being the place where this is possible, academia is simply a microcosm of everything that is wrong with the world, is heartbreaking.” -

The more you think about it, the more uni approaches to MAB deductions are equivalent to starving someone out. If you're proposing to dock someone half their wages indefinitely, you know full well what the consequences of that could be. You either don't care, or are deliberately

The "impasse" on the marking boycott is not an event detached from human action. It is not the weather. University managers have refused to negotiate. They are deciding not to. It is an active decision to avoid (destroy?) longstanding rules and routines of collective bargaining.

And let's not forget Durham University that this is an ongoing 50% deduction from a salary that in real terms is already worth 15% less than 2 years ago and 25% less than 12 years ago. Compared to 2009, we were already working 5 days a week for 4 days pay even before MAB started

Thank you PSA Women & Politics for the online writing group this morning! ✍️📝 I got stuff done that just wouldn't have happened otherwise, and I kept going after we finished. So #grateful 🤩🙏

Blimey - I have a lot going on and a head full of stuff. I'm not writing nearly enough, but I still want to share that I got an RnR. I'm knackered, but still, Yay! #celebratethesmallstuff

Once again for those who wonder why we're on MAB. In Ireland, you can earn more as a Lecturer than as a full Professor in the UK/NI. And they don't have to do REF 🫠. Looking at this I can't help feeling ucu are actually being far too reasonable. #ucuRISING #SettleTheDispute

Losing over £1800 this month in punitive MAB deductions from University of York. 50% of my salary taken for refusing to undertake <10% of my contracted work over the past two months. In a dispute the aims of which the York VC publicly claims to support. This is wage theft.

100% this👇 I'm a dropout At a teaching training session for LSE PhD students talking about supporting struggling students I admitted to being a drop out. *half* the folks round the table said 'me too'

Universities really need more sensitivity for human suffering incl homelessness. Esp now, when it is nearly impossible to find a rental place in London and multiple of our colleagues and students are at risk or are affected by a homelessness

Sorry, but I feel like we don't talk enough about how insanely amazing PrEP is. Like, I can casually pop a pill every morn and reduce my chance of catching HIV by 99% - wtf?! Simply unthinkable just over a decade ago.

Come join us at Liverpool! If you’re interested, DM me and I’d be v happy to talk about the department. Might be especially good for people following me who do comparative punishment/global imprisonment stuff… jobs.ac.uk/job/DEA783/lec…

Here is the Bingham Centre's Rule of Law Analysis of the Rwanda Safety Bill, authored by its Director Murray Hunt. We will be doing extended work on this awful Bill, the worst UK affront to the rule of law in memory (not that other odious recent memories are hard to find).
