Greenwashing is alive and well Aldi Ireland singing praises of tree planting but the trees that are being planted by commercial forestry interests are predominantly non-native and replacing existing habitats 😔 Heart in right place no doubt but end result is bad for environment
Looks like most of the ploughs in east Cork were out the past week. Balancing the needs of food production and nature isn’t easy as I’ve seen groups of Skylark flying around looking for a new winter home. Good to see the Irish Farmers Journal recently call for more research ….
A few distant photos of a Hen Harrier taken two weeks ago. Always a magnificent bird to see in their natural habitat in Ireland. Coming down from the mountains to hunt in a bog. Hen Harrier Ireland Hen Harrier Project Irish Raptor Study Group
Find out how Niall Sargent 🕵️ identified the problems caused by commercial spruce plantations in Ireland, overcame investigative challenges and ultimately told a human-centered, data-rich and award-winning story, in our latest #SEJournalInsideStory Q&A: bit.ly/3JzaBvv
Ireland's Forest Service is planting tree plantations on high nature value farmland/species rich grasslands that support ground nesting birds, insects incdg pollinators. This has to stop. Virginijus Sinkevičius Micheál Martin We need trees in the right place not wiping out biodiversity.
BirdsMatter_ie Irish Wildlife Trust Virginijus Sinkevičius Micheál Martin @npwsBioData Agree. The incoherent overlapping of portfolios in IRE admin is a legal mechanism that allows for not assigning land to nature and recognising species and associated habitat. The demise of the Hen Harrier clear case in point. #coilltenature please save all existing high natura
