(1/5) In celebrating the BC Supreme Court decision on the Cambie Surgeries case, the Justice Emmett Hall Memorial Foundation reaffirms the fundamental belief that health care in Canada should be available on the basis of need, not the ability to pay.

(2/5) Justice Emmett Hall believed deeply that all Canadians should have access to basic health care on the same terms and conditions without financial barriers. In 1982, he wrote that Canadians:

(3/5) “as a society, are aware that the trauma of illness, the pain of surgery, the slow decline to death, are burdens enough for the human being to bear without the added burden of medical or hospital bills penalizing the patient at the moment of vulnerability. ...

(4/5) The Canadian people determined that they should band together to pay medical bills and hospital bills when they were well and income earning. Health services… were a fundamental need, like education, which Canadians could meet collectively and pay for through taxes”.

(5/5) The Foundation continues its work of recognizing leaders in the health care system who advocate for Justice Hall’s ideals, and educating a new generation of scholars about Canada’s health care system.
