An unusually high quality (and weirdly dense) late 90s comic crossover that boasts art by Jim Lee, Travis Charest and Billy Tucci. One of those rare intercompany stories with real stakes that highly influenced me when it comes to crossovers.

An under appreciated DC comics gem :BLASTERS Special set up a whole universe of story possibilities that no one ever used. Story by Peter David , art by James Fry. The weird ‘space sexy’ vibe influenced me on MONEY SHOT years later.

EVIL ERNIE 1 from Eternity Comics is one of those comics that rewrote my brain. It introduced a new horror anti-hero, firmly rooted in slasher and zombie films with a heavy metal soundtrack. There’d be no HACK/SLASH without this book:

Probably my single favorite comic of all time , SAVAGE DRAGON made me realize comics was the single best medium. This particular issue made me realize all my must fucked up thoughts could be engrossing with the right art and story. By Erik Larsen!

The most fundamentally influential comic for me is the Vertigo SHADE THE CHANGING MAN. It spoke to my rural Wisconsin self about evolution & acceptance, & tho I’m straight. the queer undertones helped me understand a world that seemed foreign. Also—a terrifying horror story.

I feel like if people are unable to solve the mystery of “why am I getting paid six figures per YouTube video” then they may not be equipped to provide useful analysis on more complex political and cultural issues.
