It’s Turkey Tuesday, so here’s something of interest. Roost index values for Eastern toms marked with GPS. Values towards 1 mean birds don’t use same roost on consecutive nights. Take home-most toms roost at a different spot each night. Bret Collier James Martin Wild Turkey Report
Using a sample of 588 radio-tagged bobwhites over 3 years, we are getting annual survival rates ~15% on a hunted site in GA. Grey areas are the days hunting is allowed. We need >20% to increase bob populations. Quail Forever @NBCI_Bobwhite Nebraska Game and Parks Georgia DNR Wildlife @GT_Wann
What is most interesting is the direct harvest rates seem reasonable <20% but the natural mortality during this time decreases. This suggests that the avoidance behavior by coveys can be costly. More on this soon. Quail Forever @NBCI_Bobwhite Nebraska Game and Parks Georgia DNR Wildlife
