#FolkloreSunday Norwegian Forest Cats, also known as Viking cats, are large-bodied, domestic cats that look like something straight out of a fairy tale. According to Norse mythology, the goddess Freyja travelled across the heavens in a chariot pulled by two large cats.

The bakeneko, or changed cat, is a Japanese kaibyō, or supernatural cat. Many stories claim the bakeneko steal napkins, wear them on their heads, and dance! #Fairytaletuesday #catlore 🎨Utagawa Kuniyoshi

Nothing says it's all over like a funeral. Unless a cat jumps over the grave, and then the deceased will rise again as a vampire! #WyrdWednesday #catlore

Two cats are forbidden lovers in the fairytale, The Cat's Elopement. The cats have different owners and neither owner will give up their cat. Finally, the cats elope and appeal to the princess for help—The Pink Fairy Book by Andrew Lang. #LegendaryWednesday #catlore

Indomitable Spirits of All Kinds? How about The Demon Cat of Washington, D.C.? It prophesies significant tragedies or political events. It haunts the U.S. Capitol building. This phantom feline appears as an ordinary tabby or black cat, but grows elephant-sized. #bookologythursday

Nothing says home comforts like a roaring fire. However, if the family cat lies with its back to the fire, a huge storm is on the way. #FolkloreSunday #catlore

Placing a dead cat inside the foundations of medieval and early modern European buildings was thought to ward off evil spirits, witches, bad luck, or spiritual vermin. Their mummified or skeletal remains are often discovered during renovations. #MythologyMonday #catlore
