The RMS Lusitania was torpedoed on this day in 1915, turning American opinion against Germany and making the sinking a turning point of the war. We remember FP James L Ward who lost his life that day. He attended Hutchesons' Grammar from 1901 until 1903 before going on to do a MA
Today’s #Archive30 is #WhyArchives because they connect us to those who came before us and show us we are a part of something bigger. We have so many fascinating stories to tell and are committed to keeping the history and stories of the school alive #HutchieHistory
Today’s #Archive30 is #FutureArchives The girls’ school imagined, in 1956, what the boys school would look like when finished in 1960- unfortunately it wasn’t quite so futuristic looking as their drawing! We wonder what a Hutchie school of the future would look like?!
Today’s #Archive30 is #ArchivesForAll Do you know we don’t just hold the records for the Boys’ and Girls’ Schools at Hutchesons’ but also some records for Laurel Bank and Park Schools? We hope to keep the memory of those schools alive and welcome enquiries from former pupils!
Today’s #Archive30 is #ArchiveAdvice

Today’s #Archive30 is #BusinessArchives Our favourite business records are our letter books which are full of the daily life of the school. On ‘onion paper’ they are a fascinating record giving us great insights into how Hutchesons’ was run in the 1890s #HutchieHistory
Today’s #Archive30 is #SportsArchives Former pupil Jeremiah Noah Morris, seen here in our museum, was known as ‘The man who invented exercise’. He established the importance of physical activity in preventing cardiovascular disease and was honoured with an Olympic gold medal 🥇
Today’s #Archive30 is #SomethingScary in England they had the cane, in Scotland, the ‘tawse’ (belt). Loathed by school boys but strangely preferred to getting ‘lines’ (as you would then get the belt at home too!) In a school debate in 1960 the school boys voted to keep the belt!
Todays #Archive30 is #ArchiveSustainability Hutchesons' Grammar is over 380 years old and continues strong thanks to the dedication of its staff and making improvements throughout the school. We document these changes in the archive, including recent ones- it’s not just old stuff!
Today’s #Archive30 is #HealthArchives After Covid struck we started to collect and now have a great wee collection of the thoughts of our staff and pupils at the time, documentation and photos, including this return to school banner keeping our pupils safe! #HutchieHistory
Today’s #Archive30 is #SomethingSmall like our peg dolls the archive club painted last year representing some of our notable female former pupils- Madge Easton Anderson, Moira Beatty, Evelyn McNicol, Dorothea Chalmers Smith and Winnie Wooldridge #HutchieHistory
Today’s #Archive30 is a different kind of #ArchiveTravel while pushing the archive trolley my phone went on to driving mode…. Who knew you could go so fast pushing some archive boxes? 💨
7 days to 21!
When you’re not at all outdoorsy getting a silver DofE award is a major achievement.
His highlight was volunteering in the school archive. Enjoyed it so much he kept going until he left school. He even curated his own display. Thanks for having him HGS Archives
Today’s #Archive30 is #ArchiveObject we have lots of items to see in our new museum, one of which is this tiny swimming medal awarded to James Maxton who attended 1897-1900. He became leader of the Independent Labour Party in 1932 and was a leading figure of the Clydeside era
Today’s #Archive30 is #ArchiveFashion and we couldn’t pass up the opportunity to show off some hats! Both the hated girls’ school hats but also these fabulous French lace ones from a school trip! #HutchieHistory
Today’s #Archive30 is #ArchiveMyths We always thought our Girls’ Dux board was just inspired by Charles Rennie Macintosh’s style of lettering but a bit of digging by one of our volunteers and she found out it was actually created by him in 1906! #HutchieHistory
Today’s #Archive30 is #SomethingBig We’ve just started a BIG project- collecting the stories of all our Dux winners starting from 1829 to 1950. If your relative was a Dux Hutchesons' Grammar then please get in touch. We’d love to know more about their lives after school #HutchieHistory
Including taking a look at FP Madge Easton Anderson, first female lawyer in both England and Scotland and helped set up the first all-female law practice #HutchieHistory
Today’s #Archive30 is #MiniMilestones which is our new timeline! It had been planned for so long so we were excited when it went up in September detailing the school’s long history and showing some of our amazing archive items!
Today’s #Archive30 is #TypicalDay ….there isn’t one! We could be answering enquiries one day, cleaning moth frass the next, teaching, filming for a tv series, meeting former pupils, helping authors and volunteers, creating videos, exhibitions and social media …the list goes on!
