It's very rare I oomph twice in quick succession, but these got me: Person with £60k from unearned income has a lower effective tax rate than an <65 earning £35k through work Graduates earning £35k pay almost double the effective tax rate of someone with a rental income of £35k

You’ve heard about Antarctic sea ice lows - well, here’s the consequences. Over 9,000 emperor penguin chicks from colonies in the Bellingshausen Sea are thought to have died in November 2022. The sea ice they lived on broke up early, before they'd developed waterproof feathers.

This is the key chart for comparing transport in US vs Europe: US cities have chosen car travel. They do it pretty well (with obvious negative externalities) Euro cities (+ London) have chosen public transport, and do it pretty well UK-ex London does neither well, and suffers.

Very interesting data on travel in England. Travel trending down generally, but visiting friends down 40% in 20 years stands out. Lindsay de Sausmarez do you know if equivalent data exists for Guernsey?

Journey to work to an extra 2.5 minutes today. So many cars on the road! Glad I cycled otherwise I'd still be in the queue of cars.....

This is simply an extraordinary study. Researchers gave $7,500 (CAD) to homeless people in Vancouver. The result? The program *saved* money. It helped many of them to move into housing faster, which saved the shelter system $8,277 per person. 🧵👇

I think this heat is affecting driving standards. Seen a lot of bad/dangerous overtakes and general inpatient driving in the last 2 days. Was pretty good before that...

Cyclist in front of me jumped a red light at Le Chêne on my way home this evening. Gave them a piece of my mind when I caught up with them. Then was over taken dangerously on the corner by Forest stores. Eventful journey🤦🏻‍♂️

It's funny how signs about roadworks always seem to end up on the pavement. There are six at Bailiffs crossroads blocking the pavement. #chog

Why don't waterproof trousers have hooks for hanging them up with? Coats do. And waterproof trouser manufactures also make coats....

I can't be the only #chog who thinks the Hangman's/Bailiffs crossroad is working much better as a filter than traffic lights. At least for road users. Maybe add some zebra crossings for the pedestrian's?

Andrew Bell (@gsy_bell) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Bailiffs crossroads filter not working so well today as some drivers seem to be having issues with the concept of "in turn".

The “E-Bike Effect:” Those who bought e-bikes increased their average daily bicycle use from 2.1km (1.3 miles) to 9.2km (5.7 miles), a 340% increase. The e-bike share of all their transportation increased dramatically too; from 17% to 49%. Via Treehugger.com treehugger.com/e-bikers-ride-…

I’m late to this but I wanted to set out some thoughts on the awful BMJPublicHealth excess deaths article. Commentary has focussed on media coverage, linking deaths to vaccines, but I want to discuss the article itself, which should not have been published in its current form.
