In the midst of high fuel costs in recent years, it was interesting how an increasing number of new police vehicles were SUVs and sedans with low mpg. That will be changing with a new generation of fuel-efficient hybrid police vehicles. See the feature at bit.ly/2uOCR9d.

In the past, VW was heavily into diesel to achieve a benchmark 40+ highway mpg. That era is gone for good, for all the obvious reasons. But now VW is achieving high efficiency with gasoline engines and not just electrification. See bit.ly/2LxUscE.

How far ponycars have come! In the late 1960s my 200 hp V-8 Mustang delivered 12 mpg. Back then gas was 35 cents/gallon and we weren’t yet concerned about carbon emissions. A 310 hp, 2.3-liter EcoBoost Mustang today gets 31 highway mpg. Read about it at bit.ly/2A153vc.

The field of battery electric cars capable of 200+ miles continues to grow. We look at Hyundai’s coming Kona Electric that’s expected to deliver a 250 mile driving range. Drawback: It’s only coming to California and eventually to other ‘green’ states. bit.ly/2mwaHfC

The transition to electric vehicles is one of perseverance. I know this to be true…my articles and research have focused on this for 30 years, long before EVs were a ‘thing.’ EVs have come a long way, yet have a long way to go. Here’s one perspective: bit.ly/3m54pkB
