Just under a week to go until our event on 4 June! A welcoming, supportive space for anyone affected by the government's proposed changes to #disability benefits. We want to help as many people as possible complete the consultation before the closing date. #WelfareReform

Good on Turn2us - Tackling Financial Insecurity Together for putting together a guide for journalists reporting on the benefits system. With the PIP vote coming up, there’s no excuse for the media to use inaccurate or stigmatising language.

16 million disabled people and we can't get 100k to sign the petition. This 100k goal should have been reached in a day. #TakingThePIP petition.parliament.uk/petitions/7215…

1) To The Labour Party. It's really very simple. Implement the proposed 4 point #PIP rule & I'll lose not just PIP, but #LCWRA #UniversalCredit. I will not be able to feed myself, clothe myself, or pay for assistance. I will lose my home. I'll still not be able to work..

This is a mixture of minor concessions & repackaging existing plans - it is not a meaningful response to the serious concerns MPs have been raising The headline impact remains the same: 3.2 million ill & disabled people will see their benefits cut by the end of the parliament

Frances Ryan (@drfrancesryan) 's Twitter Profile Photo

I want to see non-disabled people shouting about the disability benefit cuts. If you spoke out about trans rights, abortion rights, or migrant rights in recent weeks? Good on you! If you aren’t doing the same for disabled people, ask yourself why.

I’m getting a lot of messages about this. So far we think that existing claimants will *not* be classed as new when they are reassessed and will therefore be protected indefinitely. We are, however, looking into this in detail so keep an eye on The Guardian as lots coming.

Interested to see what part of the EHCP process Ministers may think we don’t need - is it where: - we identify all the child’s special educational needs? - we specify the provision reasonably required to meet those needs? - the child gets the right to attend a suitable school?

And the Universal Credit bill has passed. Some of the sickest people in the country will suffer needlessly more now. There is no justification, no excuse. Just ugly, cruel choices by ministers too cowardly to tax the wealthy rather than cut the poor. A shameful day for Labour.

“It seems likely that EHCPs will not survive in their current form, with existing plans phased out over two or more years.”

“When the political and media class wish to leave disabled people hungry and dirty, the disabled community must explain why we should be allowed to eat and be clean.” Today’s col. reflects on a tough month and what it all means for disability in the U.K. theguardian.com/commentisfree/…
