My latest for The New Yorker. The world's largest carbon offsetting firm sold environmentally worthless credits, while the developer of its biggest project secretly moved of tens of millions of $ paid by Gucci, Porsche, Nestlé & others into offshore accounts. newyorker.com/magazine/2023/…

#ClimateCrisis - remaining carbon emissions budget is now 'tiny', scientists say - Having a good chance of limiting global heating to 1.5C is gone, they say, sending a ‘dire’ message about the adequacy of climate action Robin Lamboll et al Story by me theguardian.com/environment/20…

Sunak has tried his best to torch the UK's climate agenda & drag us into a toxic culture war. Here are 5 Bills he *should* announce in #KingsSpeech today - to reduce cost of living, tackle #climateemergency, transform our economy & restore nature. Our country & planet can’t wait.

Your regular reminder that the world is still not doing nearly enough to avoid dangerous warming If we'd started in 2000, emissions cuts of 3% a yr would have kept us below 1.5C Now, they must fall 18% *every yr* – or we have to use "negative emissions" carbonbrief.org/unep-humanity-…

The new UNEP emissions gap report includes a chapter focusing on carbon dioxide removal. It has a neat figure highlighting the feasibility, scalability, ease of MRV, environmental consequences, public perception, cost, and permanence of CDR pathways: unep.org/resources/emis…

Watch my new doc The Great Climate Scandal now on @channel4 - It’s incredibly scary that as we hurtle towards climate catastrophe, useless offsetting schemes like this are still such a major part of global net zero plans. There’s no more time to waste! youtu.be/L2qiJAu8YMo?si…

This FACT is too often swept under the carpet by some very intelligent and established people in the climate change sector… also add driving less, eating less animal products and buying less stuff…. Caveat: in the global north, and those wealthy individuals in the global south.

Super happy and very grateful to have been given this award by @ECSAssociation - big thanks also to the pretty amazing team I got to work on the paper with🌱🌊🥳 In case you're interested in checking it out: doi.org/10.1111/gcb.16…

My op-ed in University Affairs about the Tri-Councils’ carbon offset policy was published today. In it I ask whether the policy might actually increase emissions. I also muse about the cost of a genuine geological offset: universityaffairs.ca/opinion/in-my-…

Can seaweed farming lead to climate change mitigation?🌿🌊Seaweed farming is increasingly considered as an important strategy for carbon dioxide removal (CDR). But how much carbon do seaweed farms currently remove? Let's unravel the findings! 🧵👇 sciencedirect.com/science/articl…

We need carbon removal in addition to deep emissions reductions to get to net-zero. But as we show in a new study the durability of removals is key to ensure net-zero actually stabilizes global temperatures and meets our climate goals: nature.com/articles/s4324…
